Diagnosing Common Brake Problems

Your car’s braking system is arguably the most important system in your vehicle. For safety purposes it’s imperative to have your brakes inspected on a regular basis by a professional.

If you suspect problems with your brakes, whether it’s a soft pedal or a sharp grinding sound, it’s best to address the situation immediately by having your brakes inspected. Brake repairs are best left to experts, so if you don’t have experience inspecting and repairing these systems, bring your car or light truck to Southside Automotive or call us at 906-249-9219 to have your brakes properly inspected and serviced if needed. Safety is of the utmost concern when it comes to your vehicle’s braking system, because of this we recommend that brake repairs be performed by a qualified, properly trained technician.

Common Brake Complaints:

  1. Sponge-like or Soft Pedal – A spongy feeling or soft brake pedal is a sure sign of a problem. If you have to pump the brakes for them to work effectively, or you notice the brake pedal traveling further towards the floor than usual, this is indicative of a loss of pressure in the braking system AND should be checked immediately. When the brake pedal is soft or spongy, there could be a leak in one of the brake lines. Leaks can occur in several different places, some visible, some not. If the loss of pressure is caused by an internal failure in the master cylinder, however, you may not see fluid leaking externally.  Southside Automotive in Marquette, MI, will properly inspect your brake system and advise you as to what is needed to remedy your sponge-like pedal.
  2. Irregular Noises – If you hear a metallic sound or screeching when you use your brakes, it could be the brake pads are worn down and need to be replaced. It could also be a sign of warped rotors or a damaged caliper that can also cause you to feel a shudder in the steering wheel when applying the brakes. Once again, your best solution is to have your brakes inspected by a professional repair facility.
  3. Brake Indicator Lightbrake light. If you see the brake warning light on your dashboard, do NOT ignore it. Immediately stop your vehicle and do not use it again until the braking systems can be properly inspected and diagnosed.
